Ángel Botello was a Spanish-Puerto Rican painter, sculptor and graphic artist. He was dubbed "The Caribbean Gauguin" for his use of bold colors and depictions of island life. His work is considered the reflection of his attachment to the customs of the peoples and ethnic groups of Mexican territory. He was educated at Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
