History And Summary of Building Needs

The campus of the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick is located in downtown New Brunswick. The campus consists of a sanctuary building, the Education Building, and the Sexton’s House (renamed in 2020 to the Barbara Littman House). All three buildings are set on a half city block.

Project’s Vision

With the permission of First Reformed Church, the vision of Town Clock Community Development Corporation is to renovate this historic Education Building, following the organization’s mission of creating permanent, affordable and safe housing with supportive services for survivors of domestic violence and their children.

Town Clock CDC envisions that this Education Building can become a true community center with the following changes:

The first floor would become a community center. Fellowship Hall would be used for workshops and community activities for the survivors of domestic violence. The kitchen would be renovated to be a nutrition and cooking center for the residents. There would be storage space and offices for First Reformed Church as well as a one-bedroom permanent, supportive, affordable housing unit with its own entry. An elevator would provide ADA access to various floors.

The second floor would offer the greatest possibility for apartments. It is the vision that there be at least four studio apartments and two 2-bedroom apartments.

The basement floor would house the heating and air conditioning systems as well as all other utilities. An expanded food and clothing pantry for the all residents who live within Town Clock CDC’s facilities would be created in the front areas of the basement.
